Hybrid & Electric Drives
Product Discussion
Arnold has been involved for several years in the production of magnets and magnetic assemblies for use in motors and generators for hybrid and full electric (EV) drive vehicles. These drive systems are used in commercial, consumer, industrial and military vehicles.
These drives include:
- ISG's (Integrated Starter Generators)
- Generators: from tens to hundreds of kilowatts output
- Traction Motors
- Drive Motors: in-line and independent in-wheel
- KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems)
- Embedded magnet motor/generator rotors: Injection Molded, Sintered Neo and Samarium Cobalt
Arnold's assemblies have been used in conjunction with gas and diesel hybrid, fuel cell and pure electric systems. Assemblies have utilized Recoma SmCo (Samarium Cobalt) or Neo (Neodymium-iron-boron) magnets. While most hybrid drive vehicles made for consumer use are sized at 50 to 75 kilowatts output, special-use vehicles can employ very small or very large drive systems. Arnold has created assemblies used in a variety of power outputs from a few watts to hundreds of kilowatts.
Applications have included:
- Electric in-wheel propulsion (typically military or off-road construction vehicles)
- Traction drive propulsion
- Magnetic dragway or speedster vehicles
- Marine (boat/ship and submarine) electric propulsion, both for main drive as well as for bow and stern (steering) propulsion
- Electric wheel chairs
- Electric motorcycles and scooters
Arnold has worked with both commercial applications as well as military applications such as generators for the MRAP and MATV systems and can produce domestic, ITAR and DFARS compliant magnets and assemblies. Magnetic assemblies vary greatly and may include potting, sleeving (inconel, composite, stainless steel) and balancing.
