Quality Certification Definitions
AS 9100
Suppliers to the aerospace industry know that there is no more important quality standard than AS9100, which is based upon ISO 9000. The industry has added a number of requirements to the standards specific to the aerospace sector. Conformance to AS9100 provides international credibility that an organization adheres to the strictest quality standards required for aircraft, aircraft parts, and aircraft repair.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines individual manufacturing approvals through its Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and laws mandating compliance. Subsequently, AS9100 is rapidly becoming a prerequisite for doing production in the aerospace business, as many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) only work with suppliers that are certified to the aerospace standard. Also, many International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) member companies have deployed AS9100 within their own organizations.
ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is an international quality standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a worldwide federation of national standards bodies representing some 130 countries. The standard covers all aspects of an organization's activities, including identifying its key processes, defining roles and responsibilities, policies and objectives, documentation requirements, the importance of understanding and meeting customer requirements, communication, resource requirements, training, product and process planning, design processes, purchasing, production and service, monitoring and measurement of products and processes, customer satisfaction, internal audit, management review, and improvement processes.
ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
This is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) through dedicated technical committees representing approximately 150 countries around the world. Its purpose is to enable an organization of any type or size to develop and implement a policy committing it to prevention of pollution, compliance with legal and other requirements, and continual improvement. The realization of this commitment will be a management system that recognizes and manages the primary environmental issues through awareness and assessment of applicable legal requirements, objectives for improvement, assignment of responsibilities, competent personnel, communications, procedures, controls and monitoring, emergency response capability, self correction and assessment, and internal reviews. These processes are to be based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.
ISO/TS 16949 Automotive Quality Standard
ISO/TS 16949 is the result of a phased-in industry approach to developing a single standard for the entire automotive supply chain, including design/development, production, installation and servicing of automotive components. Developed by the IATF for global recognition, it has become a mandatory set of requirements for many automotive OEMs in North America and Europe.
This standard recognizes the uniqueness of every automotive supplier's process, while providing critical tools to help your company better meet customer-specific requirements. Rather than using the "element" or checklist method of the QS-9000 standard, ISO/TS 16949 is based on the process approach.
