Probably the single most prevalent device employing magnetic materials is a motor. There are many types of motors including AC, DC, brushless DC (ECM), induction, variable reluctance, etc.
Arguably, the second most common device is the transformer. Transformers, which use "soft" magnetic materials, reduce transmission line voltages of several thousand volts to factory voltages of 480 volts. Additional transformers reduce voltages to 220 and 110 VAC. Isolation transformers are used to ensure sensitive equipment sees "pure" AC sine waves.
Factory automation has increased the need for position, speed, liquid & solid level, and other sensors. Many utilize magnets which provide for non-contact sensing and switching. Magnets, in conjunction with Hall effect devices, provide for variable output.
Magnets and magnetic materials and devices have contributed greatly to the increase in worker productivity during the 20th century.

| Application Examples |
Magnetic Clamp Bases are used to secure gauges to machinery or other steel surfaces.
