JUNE 2009

Energy Efficient Motors Short Course
1-Jun-2009 - 3-Jun-2009
Renaissance Indianapolis North, Carmel (Indianapolis), Indiana USA
Energy savings is possible for nearly every electric motor application, but not every case can justify the costs to change to a higher efficiency motor. Practical considerations of the real costs for initial purchase, installation, operation and maintenance must be a part of the decision process.
This course will explain basic principles of electric motor operation to understand how operation of new energy efficient motors differ from older motors. Special emphasis will be on understanding what effects the efficiency of a motor, how to calculate the potential savings of alternative choices, and how to ensure energy savings is realized in the long term. Three number-crunching workshops are included.
Download the seminar agenda and registration form and visit the Advanced Motor Tech website.

Superconducting Materials and Applications
24-Jun-2009
University of Birmingham, UK
Superconductivity was discovered in 1911 by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes. However, it was not until the 1960s that superconducting electromagnets (based on Nb-Ti with a critical temperature, Tc ~ 20K) were commercially available. These type of superconductors became known as "low Tc" after the discovery, in 1986, of the cuprate based "high Tc" superconductors with Tc > 90K. Today, the majority of applications are still in the use of superconductors to generate high magnetic fields for MRI, scientific experiments etc..., and mostly employ low Tc materials. The aim of this meeting is to review these applications and to present emerging and future applications of low and high Tc materials, including fault current limiters, microwave devices and rotating machines.

AUGUST 2009

Thermal Properties of Permanent Magnets
3-Aug-2009
Webinar hosted by Webcom Communications.
• Thermal characteristics are often viewed as the Achilles Heel of permanent magnets. Even though materials may be well-behaved at room temperature, things seem to deteriorate as the temperature either rises or falls. In addition, there are several nearly mutually exclusive ways to describe the various thermal behaviors.
• This webinar will explain the fundamental reasons why permanent magnets have a thermal nature, how this behavior is characterized, the practical significance of each method and finally the characteristics you should ignore, discount or emphasize when using permanent magnets.
