HOME : TECHNOLOGY CENTER : SEMINARS : SOFT MAGNETIC PRODUCTS
TARGET AUDIENCE Persons who are seeking a more detailed course in soft magnetic products and their applications, for example: Design Engineers, Production and Application Engineers. CONTENT Emphasis is placed on how to select, procure and use soft magnetic materials. Both powder core and tape wound core materials are described primarily within the context of inductors, transformers and current sensors operating at 400 Hz and higher frequencies. Comparative information and data for electrical steel laminations, iron powder cores and ferrites will also be presented. Topics covered include magnetic material terminology, how material properties relate to core size, measurement of key parameters, core material selection, general composition and manufacturing information and procurement specifications. The class complements courses such as the University of Wisconsin's How to Design Magnetic Components and Bloom Associates' Modern Power Conversion Design Techniques. A hands-on laboratory session is included. Simple exercises are used to familiarize participants with calculating inductance, magnetic flux density, magnetizing force and other fundamental quantities. Participants are encouranged to bring a calculator and samples of product they wish measured for magnetic characteristics. The Materials Selection sessions include such issues as core compositions, manufacturing processes, advantages and limitations of each material type, and design considerations. CLASS SCHEDULE
