Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES)

Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES)

Arnold Magnetic Technologies’ thin Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) is 3% silicon steel which is processed under carefully controlled conditions. Arnold produces GOES from several different grades of Silicon steel, all of which are produced in the USA and are DFARS compliant. This steel is purchased in a “pickled” condition which allows Arnold to roll it to very thin gauges. Once it has been rolled and undergone further processing the material receives an insulating coating, which keeps eddy current losses to a minimum.

Arnold produces GOES in thicknesses of 0.001″ (0.025mm), 0.002″ (0.05mm), 0.004″ (0.10mm) and 0.006″ (0.15mm) and provides slit widths from 0.02″ (5.08mm) to 17.0″ (431.8mm), depending on gauge.

Our grain oriented silicon steel material meets IEC 60404-8-8.

Arnold GOES thin gauge strip can be shipped bare or with an inorganic coating, capable of surviving 920°C annealing temperature (C-5 IEEE class).

GOES APPLICATIONS

Arnold’s GOES materials are typically used in power, instrument and current transformers, as well as cores for High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Arnold’s GOES materials are commonly produced in 0.006″ (0.15mm) and 0.004″ (0.10mm) thicknesses for frequencies below 1 KHz, and 0.001″ (0.025mm) and 0.002″ (0.05mm) for higher frequencies.

For higher frequency applications, using thinner materials reduces the negative effects of core losses due to eddy currents. By keeping core loss to a minimum, heat buildup is minimized.

Arnold’s GOES is available in the following gauges and dimensions:
