Auto, Aero and Defense Electrification: Optimizing Induction and PM Motor Design for Manufacturing

As the demand for electrification continues to grow globally, the automotive, aerospace, and defense markets face unprecedented challenges. New technologies are placing greater demands on motors in terms of operating speeds, temperatures, and efficiencies. For example, very large turbine generators are needed to power multiple-wing propellers used on hybrid and electric aircraft. The presentation will examine the importance of optimizing induction and permanent magnet motor design for manufacturing. Also discussed are manufacturability pros and cons within the stator and rotor, as well as all the materials and processes that go into making a highly efficient, quality motor, adding in more background on die-cast induction machines and novel PM rotor topologies.

Aaron Williams is the Director of Strategic Technologies & Business Development with Arnold Magnetic Technologies. He has 13+ years’ experience in the magnetics industry holding multiple positions from Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Program Management, Director of Engineer, and Business Development. He is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and holds an MBA from the University of Rochester Simon School of Business. He is an active participant in multiple industry collaborations including Motor and Motion, Magnetics, MCMA, ECCE, IEEE/IEMDC, and others. He also regularly works with learning institutions and research centers such as University of Kentucky, Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium, Draper Labs, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, Oak Ridge National Labs, and lastly AMES Labs. Aaron concentrates on technologies that enable higher power densities and efficiencies in rotating electrical machinery spanning all platforms and end use markets.
